Hands-On History Center Peek Into the Past A Lesson in Needs & Wants Pioneer Program A 19th Century Community The Ox-Cart Man

Grades One, Two, Three, Four & Five

The children’s book, The Ox-Cart Man, by Donald Hall sets the stage for this program. The award-winning book provides a wonderful look at the work and responsibilities of a typical farm family in America’s past.

Broom making

The farmer in this book prepares to go to the far away city taking with him goods that his family has produced throughout the year. Your students will be able to participate in some of these same activities, that American families did, to remain self-sufficient.

Carding, spinning and weaving wool are several steps in the cloth-making process. Students will also be able to try their hands at basic embroidery skills and even help make a broom.

Your class will learn first hand about the production of goods, the economy of our past, barter system and the purchasing power of a dollar. You will have a new, student-made, round broom to take back to your classroom.
