Heritage Village Museum begins 2008 with a series of educational and fun events and workshops. Winter is a time to wrap yourself around a good book, and best of all to share it with friends. With that in mind a four month Book Club will be held in front of the fireplace in the Hayner Ballroom at Heritage Village. The group or groups, will have a session in the afternoon for those who do not like to drive after dark and one in the evening for folks who work during the day. After perusing our bookshelves and considering many many books we have made our list for this season.
We hope you join us and enjoy the discussions and new friendships. The afternoon sessions will start at 2:30 with tea and cookies, the evening sessions will start at 6:30 also with tea and cookies. Participants may park by the Hayner House and enter via the ramp.
Persian Pickle Club by Sandra Dallas – January 24.
During the 1930’s in Kansas, the drought lasted so long the crops burnt up. There were no jobs to be found and many people left Kansas for California or Florida in hopes of better times. For the farmers and their families who stayed put times were difficult, and women bonded in unusual ways. This group of women were quilters, and as you read the book an endearing story unfolds depicting small town eccentricities. The book relates a tough time in America, with an authentic look at the social fabric of Depression-era life, and a homespun suspense story added in.
Roughing It by Mark Twain – February 28
A tale of the West while the East was fighting a war. A yarn every American needs to read, decipher the lies, and enjoy the colloquialism. Mark Twain relates his experiences of travel in the West as a young man, telling a story almost believable. His descriptions of people, events, wildlife, and the landscape are so catching you almost choke on the dust.
Over the Edge of the World by Laurence Bergreen March 27
In 1519 Magellan and his fleet of five ships set sail from Seville, Spain, to discover a water route to the fabled Spice Islands, where the most sought-after commodities (cloves, pepper and nutmeg) flourished. What happened to them and their adventure? This book answers all the wonders you ever considered.
Betty Zane by Zane Grey April 24.
A pioneer story of central Ohio. Here is an interesting book all Ohioans should read. A tale of North American Indians, pioneer life, adventure, travel, and statehood in its beginnings. Written by a renown American author about his own family, an inviting piece of literature.
