Description:
Over 200 soldiers, civilians, and sutlers of the Civil War time period will gather at Heritage Village in Sharon Woods Park, May 19th and 20th to reenact camp life and battles of the war between the states. Cavalry, cannons, and infantry from both sides of the great conflict will be on hand to once again retell the story. Abraham Lincoln will be in prominent view talking about the struggle with slavery, states rights, and the battles. He will give his Gettysburg Address throughout the weekend. On Saturday and Sunday there will be numerous activities in the historic village – soldiers camps where they will be cooking caring for their equipment, the houses will be busy with open hearth cooking, sewing, weaving, quilting, and writing letters to soldiers with quill and ink. Other activities will include visiting the print shop where presses will be busy at work, including a visiting stone press doing lithographies. In the historic Hayner House the museum has installed a Civil War Era Clothing Exhibit of ball gowns, tea gowns, children’s clothing, mourning gowns, walking dresses and cases of accessories. All weekend through-out the Village there will be students from the School of Performing Arts reenacting the Underground Railroad in which visitors may participate. And guests will have the opportunity to taste real goober peas. On both Saturday and Sunday afternoon re-enactors of both the Federal Troops and the Confederate Troops will perform a mock battle with cavalry, cannons, and infantry. Prior to battles there will be camp life and drilling, a blessing of the troops, Sunday morning church service, and a Saturday morning funeral. Visiting the troops in camp is encouraged and they will teach and explain life as a Civil War soldier. Guests will enjoy Civil War period music through out the village all weekend long. On Saturday evening Heritage Village Museum will hold its annual Civil War Ball from 8:00 to 10:30 p.m. There is an admission charge of $15 per person or $25 per couple for the Ball which will include dance instructions, music, and light refreshments.
