Event:
Abraham Lincoln and the Gettysburg Moment

April 25th

Few speeches are more famous in our nation's history than Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. At a time when our country was facing its most difficult challenges yet, Lincoln found the words to change the course of the Civil War and ultimately America's history. Follow Professor Martin P. Johnson as he retells the story of this admired and yet controversial speech that transformed the nation.

Martin P. Johnson is currently a professor of history at Miami University Hamilton. His interest in the history of nationalism, political ideologies, and the cultural construction of meaning has led to his current research focus on the Gettysburg Address. This research also expresses an understanding of the creation of "the Gettysburg Address" as a creative process of cultural performance rather than a discrete act of individual authorship.

This event begins at 7:00pm in the Hayner House and is free to the public.

The Gettysburg Moment is made possible, in part, by the Ohio Humanities Council, a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
